Research Project: Social, Cultural and Economic Capitals and the School Performance of Science Students: A Proposal to Understand the Processes of this Relationship.

This research project is based on Pierre Bourdieu's theories about school reproduction, Vigotski's socio-cultural theory and a dialectical conception of the world. The main goal of this project is to analyze how the factors outside the school (cultural, social and economic capital) affect the students' schooling process in science. However, this will be a long-term research that aims to evaluate the entire schooling process of a sample of students, from their literacy to the last grade of high school. The research will essentially consist of two steps. The first step will be to assess how social, cultural and economic capitals relate to student performance in reading, math and science in elementary and high school from the assessments of SAEB, ANA, ENEM and PISA, from quantitative studies. The second step will be to unveil which mechanisms and psychological functions of students are influenced by social, cultural and economic capital and are able to determine students' performance from their follow-up. At this stage, we will use as data collection instrument, questionnaires and interviews with students and those responsible for the students. Speech analysis will be used to analyze the data from this stage. If necessary, we will also use quantitative analyzes.
