The creation of the Chemistry Postgraduate Program (PPGQ) - Federal University of Jataí (UFJ) is part of an institutional planning aimed since 2011, when was created the Bachelor Degree in Chemistry. This expansion allowed the strengthening of the graduation degree in this area and will supply the lack of Masters Degree Courses in the Midwest region of Brazil as specified in CAPES area report.

Chemistry is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary science where traditional areas interact with each other and transcend the "limits" of knowledge being applied to several areas of knowledge. Therefore, the area of concentration of chemistry was structured to encompass the traditional areas of chemistry (analytical, physical-chemical, inorganic and organic) seeking to produce cutting-edge knowledge beyond the boundaries that divide them, using the basic knowledge of chemical science to be used in many different purposes. The concentration area in chemistry aims to favor the most effective collaboration between research groups in this program, allowing greater flexibility in the preparation of student work plans.

The research lines related to this area are:

i) Chemical Analysis and Separations, which involve research on development, validation and application of analytical methods (electroanalytical, spectrometry, chromatography etc);

ii) Natural Products Chemistry, which involves research on the chemical prospecting of Cerrado plant species and their biological activities; chemical ecology and synthesis and modifications of natural products;

iii) Chemistry Teaching, which aims to develop new teaching-learning methodologies applied to science teaching and also research aimed at understanding the problems related to chemistry teaching;

iv) Materials Chemistry, which is a multidisciplinary area that crosses the boundaries of chemistry and uses concepts from physics, biology and engineering to develop new materials and technologies.

The structuring of the course with a single concentration area allows the insertion of a larger amount of teachers who develop diverse researches, as well as the inclusion of new projects that includes existing research lines or the creation of new concentration areas, allowing the expansion of the teachers amount in the program.

Finally, our Chemistry Postgraduate Program aims to train human resources for the academic and industrial sectors, with solid knowledge in chemistry that contributes to the scientific and technological development of the Midwest region.
